How To Hashtag an Event

Hastags are the new Neon Signs; and if used correctly, it’s an easy and fun way to draw attention to your event and to share and find moments. You can use hastags at weddings, bar mitzvahs, family reunions, birthday bashes and corporate functions. Hashtags make it easy for guests who can’t attend an event to follow the fun. Marcia Selden Catering & Event Planning knows how to throw a fabulous party, and they’re here to give you their top tips to successful hashtagging!

Make it Match (the event!)
There are hashtag generators for weddings and also for any event or usage that needs a custom hashtags. You type in a quick description or title of your event, and it will generate a custom hashtag, if you don’t like it, you can keep trying until you get it right. Before deciding on a hashtag, do a quick search on social media channels to see if it’s already been used—if so, try again.

It’s OK to Be Cutesy:
We love these cheeky ideas for party hashtags (just replace them with your own last name or location!)

#HappilyEverHarrison
#SmithPartyof2
#NewlywedsOnTheBlock
#ReginaLovesJohn
#StokedToBeASorensen
#EandSRForBestWeddingEver
#BriannasBash
#MarniesMitzvah

Be Punny
Try and use an idiom or pun to make your hashtag—it’s lighthearted and humorous. If your last name is a common word (example #GoodKnight #NewDuoOnTheBloch) then give it a whirl. There are tons of idiom websites to help you find inspiration.

#CapitalizationIsAwesome
It’s easier to read if you capitalize each word in a hashtag…your guests will thank you!

Keep it short
No one wants to take time at the event to type an incredibly long string of letters. (pro-tip-if you use/create a hashtag on Instagram, it will show up in your hashtag history for easy access).

Promote Away! (before the event)
Let everyone know the hashtag for the event, and encourage them to use it by promoting it everywhere! On the event website, invitations, emails, social media, etc. You can also provide all event updates through the hashtag to get the conversation started. The more visible it is—the more likely people are to use it.

Make Hashtag Props:
Provide props to add stylish flair and encourage picture and hashtag use–guests love to don a fun hat, glasses, or a sign with a clever saying or your custom hashtag!
